Do you really think taking care of your image can make you the evil stepmother of Snow White? I think taking care of your image and controlling your nonverbal communication is nowadays as important as writing or reading. If oral communication and nonverbal communication were part of our elemental education, today we would be more professionals and secures, not doubt. Sometimes we let us go with the social imposed values looking for what is "good".... And trying to look good can be consider selfish, but come on, be honest!
I had been willing to make an entrie about this issue for a long time, and now that I am sick and I have time, there it goes!!
The first political discussion ever televised
Kennedy was shining fabulously Californian tanned (where it had spent the days before to the debate), and had taken care of its image to the perfection and hiss dark suit was just prepared to receive the aggressive light of the set up to its smile and hairstyle. Meanwhile, Nixon was showing a terrible sickly and tired aspect, he had been sick last days, grown thin, and he did not want to use make up... He did not give the necessary importance to its image and that played a trick on him.
The most surprising thing about this discussion was that, in spite of the fact that the content of the message toward winner to a tired and pale Nixon (as were able to observe those who followed the debate on the radio), a young, tan and physically studied Kennedy was the undisputed winner in television and this brought him a distinct advantage in the election.
This first televised political event is certainly proof that your image DOES matter. Despite what many believe, if you want to be a good professional you have to cultivate your image and not just your ideas. Non-verbal communication is nowadays one of the most important communication´s aspects.
Not all situations are the same, nor the charges to which you're eligible, that is why it is important know how to adapt your image and non-verbal communication to each situation, because even though many still believe in the image consultants as simple hairdressers, many great personalities (not just artists) own today their triumph to these advisers.
Of course you don't have go to big to take care of these details. My advice is to take care of your image every day from the small things. From the tone of your clothes, through the look of your skin or your face expression, everything communicates, therefore it is important to know who you are, see yourself as you actually are, and keep in mind that this is how well the others will see you.
Love,
Adri
